When I started learning Spanish, I quickly realized that knowing vocabulary and grammar wasn’t enough to sound natural. The real magic happens when you start using linking words to connect your thoughts. These little words—like pero, además, or por eso—help you speak and write more fluidly, just like native speakers.
There are a few categories of linking words that I found super helpful. Here are some of the most useful:
To add information: y, además, también
To contrast ideas: pero, sin embargo, aunque
To explain cause and effect: porque, así que, por eso
To give examples: por ejemplo, como, tal como
At first, I wrote short paragraphs using only basic words. Then, I’d rewrite them by adding linking words. This helped me see how my ideas could flow better. One of the most helpful tools was listening to native Spanish content. I’d listen to podcasts like La Fuerza En Ti and jot down every connector I heard. It was a game-changer.
I also paid attention to how our Lingobi community used these words during practice sessions. Watching learners level up their flow and confidence by mastering just a few connectors was incredibly inspiring.
Don’t worry about memorizing every linking word at once. Start with the ones that feel natural to you. Use them when writing journal entries or texting friends. Over time, they’ll become second nature.
