When learning Spanish, one essential structure to master is how to say "I would." In English, we use "would" to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, or future actions from the past. In Spanish, this is done using the conditional tense.
In Spanish, the conditional tense is formed by adding specific endings to the infinitive form of verbs. For regular verbs, the endings are:
-ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían
Let’s see some examples:
Comer (to eat): Yo comería una pizza. (I would eat a pizza.)
Viajar (to travel): Yo viajaría a España. (I would travel to Spain.)
Hablar (to speak): Yo hablaría con el profesor. (I would speak with the teacher.)
Some verbs have irregular stems in the conditional, but they use the same endings. Here are a few common ones:
Hacer (to do/make): Yo haría ejercicio. (I would exercise.)
Tener (to have): Yo tendría más tiempo. (I would have more time.)
Decir (to say): Yo diría la verdad. (I would tell the truth.)
The conditional tense is super useful in everyday conversations. Try making sentences with your own examples, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel.
